Edward (Ed) Sanders is an author, poet, musician and environmental activist associated with the late years of the “Beat” generation and the 1960s “counterculture” movement in New York City.
The collection contains several of Sanders’ books of prose, narrative poetry and collections of individual poems in book and pamphlet form. It also contains several magazines, journals, broadsheets and vinyl record albums.

Collection Overview
Sanders was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1937 and attended New York University where he received a degree in Greek in 1964. Sanders’ work as a poet is notable, along with his New York bookstore, the Peace Eye for spreading a radical, anti-establishment message. In 1966, New York police raided the Peace Eye and charged Sanders with obscenity. Sanders was a founding member of the band The Fugs, which produced several albums of music reflecting the counterculture. Sanders also made a number of solo albums through the years. Sanders has published numerous books of poetry, and is the founder of the so-called “Investigative Poetry” movement. So of his works are book-length poems. Sanders also wrote prose, including novels and memoirs. In the 1980s and 1990s, Sanders found recognition from the mainstream, earning several fellowships, grants and awards for his writing, and more recently was chosen writer-in-residence at the New York State Writer’s Institute. He lives in Woodstock, New York.
