About

Launders Science Library, located in Fox Hall, supports study and research in the physical and natural sciences, psychology, technology, and the history of science. The science library is home to a teaching space for library and general instruction, the Science Writing Center, and the Elberty Spatial Analysis GIS Lab. It also provides all students with access to high-quality scanning equipment, Naturalist Packs, and many spaces for quiet study.

Research Assistance at Launders

Science Librarian Gwen Cunningham offers research assistance to help students find the best information available on their topics. Some ways she can assist students include choosing appropriate databases, developing search strategies, keyword selection, evaluating sources, using interlibrary loan to acquire materials, using RefWorks and generating citations, as well as answering any other questions you may have about our library resources. Gwen provides in-class library instruction as well as research support to faculty. Reference and research assistance services are available Monday-Friday 9:00am-5:00pm with flexibility to schedule outside these hours.

The WORD Studio provides drop-in tutoring and science writing assistance in Launders Science Library.  There are four science writing tutors--three Bio majors and one Chem major--to assist in any science writing assignment from a lab report to a presentation to a poster to a research paper.

Hours for Fall 2021 in Launders are:

  • Sundays 4-7pm
  • Tuesdays 1-3pm
  • Wednesdays 7-9pm
  • Thursdays 5-7pm

Please note that the four science writing tutors still have appointment-only hours in ODY as well, which can be booked on our website here.  So now there are TWO options: drop in at Launders (in person), or make an appointment (online or in person) at ODY.

These 4 tutors took a course with the WORD Studio Director on tutoring, and are great at what they do.  They are: Thia, Adwoa, Emily, and Chyanne--read about them here.

Student Microscopy Exhibit

Each semester, the St. Lawrence community votes to select their favorite confocal microscopy images created by students in Jill Pflugheber's Biol 392 Research Methods in Fluorescence and Confocal Microscopy class. Launders Science Library has teamed up with the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery to create a revolving display of these stunning images in the library. All are welcome to come check out the students' favorite images!

For more information and to see the digital versions of the Spring 2019 contestants, please visit the confocal image contest page

Many thanks to Catherine Tedford, Carole Mathey and Jo Skiff for putting together this exhibit of student work.

New Photo Exhibit at Launders

Image

Launders Science Library is proud to host a selection of photographs from "Through the Narrows: Meditations on an Adirondack River" by Kristin V. Rehder. The exhibit features a selection of photos that were previously shown at the Richard F. Brush Art Gallery in 2018. Rehder's black and white photos are an exploration of the East Branch of the Oswegatchie River. These ethereal photographs were captured using a vintage 1945 Rolleiflex twin-lens reflex film camera, many taken from the artist's kayak!

Learn more about the exhibit by reading the artist's statement and a feature story on NCPR by Dale Hobson.

Many thanks to Catherine Tedford and Carole Mathey for bringing this collection of photographs to the Science Library.
