This diary, covering the time between January 1, 1865 and July 22, 1865, was kept by Private William H. Carr who served in the 14th New York Heavy Artillery. It is very detailed with Carr writing nearly every day. With the diary is a student paper on Carr containing transcriptions of most of the entries, as well as copies of Carr’s pension documents.

Collection Overview

Private William H. Carr was from Rossie, NY in St. Lawrence County. The 14th New York Heavy Artillery A Company was primarily recruited out of Ogdensburg, New York in July of 1863. The diary was purchased in 1995 from a rare book dealer, Charles Apfelbaum.
