North Country Research Prize

Uprooted like so many things last Spring, the North Country Research Prize contest went forward this summer, and over the course of the summer we received a number of stellar submissions.  The winners of the three categories were:

Students, faculty, staff, and community members are now welcome to use the main entrance to ODY Library.

Adirondack Maps

In these Covid-ridden times, you may have wished for an Adirondack weekend, which depending on the day’s travel moratorium may or may not have come true.  While it is beyond the SLU Libraries magic to make wishes come true, we have acquired a number of interesting Adirondack maps this autumn.  Among them is a set “Map of Adirondack Lands” from the New York State Fisheries, Game, and Forest Commission dated 1896 that provides detailed information on the status of the lands in all of the Adirondack Park (in four maps).  It is a simply beautiful object.  We have

Shantaa (she/her/) is a Psychology and History double major with a minor in African American Studies. Shantaa would like to use her background with effective tutoring principles at the WORD Studio to assist her peers with their reading and writing skills to alleviate some of the stressors associated with starting or writing a paper. She is very passionate about advocacy and creating a comfortable and inclusive space for all her peers and clients. In her spare time, she enjoys nature walks, watching anime, and trying out new makeup looks!

Shantaa is studying away in Washington, DC in Fall 2024. 

Sofi

Sofi (she/her) is a Global Studies and Government double major, with a possible minor in English. She is an international student from Venezuela, and she has spent time recently in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Sofi loves to hang out with her friends, enjoy sunny days sitting on the Adirondack chairs, and definitely a good chocolate ice cream. When it comes to tutoring, she would like to use her non-native speaker background and encourage her peers to find their voices through their writing. She sees tutoring as an opportunity to connect with other people and learn from their writing styles.

Sofi is studying away in NYC in Fall 2024.

Anni (she/her) is a Creative Writing and Psychology double major, with an Outdoor Studies minor. In addition to working at the WORD studio, Anni is the yoga coordinator for SluFlowProject (affiliated with the Lighthouse). Along with a love of intentional living, Anni also enjoys playing outside, skiing, running, singing, and dancing. Anni brings this energetic, intentional mindset to her work at the WORD Studio, emphasizing interpersonal connection and collaboration in her sessions. She looks forward to empowering her peers to write boldly, with individual styles and voices.

Abby (she/her) is a double major in English and Philosophy. She is very passionate about learning in any respect, and she looks forward to helping other students hone their writing skills while also developing a greater appreciation for academic or creative writing. Outside of school, Abby enjoys watching movies, listening to music, reading, and writing.

Sam

Sam is a Global Studies and Multi-Language double major from Burlington, Vermont. He is a member of the crew team here at St. Lawrence, and in his free time enjoys mountain biking, sailing, and Nordic skiing. He hopes to make tutoring a two-way street of learning, where he learns as much as he teaches.

Sam is studying abroad in Vietnam in Fall 2024.

Tuana (she/her) is a Data Science and Sociology major, with a minor in Arabic Studies. She is originally from Bursa, Turkey but also studied in Tanzania for two years. She spends most of her time serving in various student organizations such as Thelmothesian Society, Common Ground Connections, and Islamic Culture Club. She enjoys learning new languages, reading, and baking with her friends. She hopes to empower students, especially non-native English speakers, to communicate confidently by becoming a tutor at WORD Studio. She is excited to work with everyone and to welcome students with her big smile!

MinhAnh (she/her) is a double major in Finance and Computer Science from Vietnam. Having spent two years studying in eSwatini and taking a gap year traveling before starting college, she developed an interest in promoting diversity and fostering intercultural communication. MinhAnh hopes to be a companion to her peers, especially non-native English speakers, on their writing journey, encouraging them to confidently express and explore themselves. Outside of academics, she delights in traveling, uncovering new corners of cities to find the perfect cup of coffee, and listening to new acquaintances' stories.
