Copying and Scanning Guidelines
The Frank and Anne Piskor Reading Room is the access point for the materials in the St. Lawrence University Special Collections. If you’d like to use our collections, please come visit us. Our foremost responsibility in providing copying or scanning of materials is to support the St. Lawrence University curriculum, conduct University business, or facilitate research into the institution by alumni. We provide limited copying or scanning support to members of the community or researchers requesting digital or photocopied materials in lieu of an in-person visit.
We will decline requests for photocopying or scanning if materials are too fragile to do so. We may decline a request if using a flatbed scanner would compromise the integrity of the original object. We will decline a request to scan a complete monograph, or other requests of excessive length. We will decline requests if we believe they violate copyright law. Individuals wanting copies of content from serials in our Rare Book Collection should request said through their local library’s interlibrary loan services.
Faculty, Staff, Students
Access to our collections is by appointment, so faculty, staff, and students should be in touch with Special Collections Librarian Paul Doty (pdoty@stlawu.edu) to arrange for the copying or scanning of materials. Requests should correspond to class preparation, original research, or university business. While we are happy to assist with personal endeavors, our ability to provide scanning or copying support for said is limited. There is not cost for copying and scanning in support of academic work and university business.
We cannot facilitate rush requests.
In coordination with the Director of Research & Digital Scholarship, we can produce high-quality scans of materials in our manuscript collection for faculty in support of their research or course preparation. These projects can be published as part of the SLU Libraries Digital Collections. As our policy is to produce museum-quality digital images, this requires lead-time for planning, given we can only work on one such project at a time. Please contact Special Collections Librarian Paul Doty to discuss ideas and timeframes.
For photocopying or scanning of materials in the University Archives in excess of twenty pages, we can assist university staff in using the scanning and photocopying equipment in the Special Collections area. This is by appointment.
Alumni
We are delighted to assist alumni researching in our University Archives. Both inquiries about materials and requests for scanning or copying should go to Special Collections Librarian Paul Doty. The conditions described in the second paragraph of this document apply to requests to scan or copy materials in the Archives.
We cannot facilitate rush requests.
There is no cost to photocopy or scan for alumni. However, we have a limit of 20 pages per week per person.
Researchers Visiting the Reading Room
We will strive to assist researchers visiting the Frank and Anne Piskor Reading Room with photocopy and scanning. Researchers are free to make their own photographs of materials they are viewing.[1]
We cannot facilitate rush requests. Researchers will be asked to complete a photocopy request form and we will send materials to an e-mail or postal address. For researchers visiting the Frank and Anne Piskor Room we will make 20 photocopied or scanned pages at no cost, and fees for photocopying or scanning beyond that. The conditions described in the second paragraph of this document apply to requests to scan or copy materials.
Researchers from Outside the University Community
We wish to make our collections available to researchers whatever their locale, however, we have limited ability to attend to the requests to do scanning and photocopying. There is a maximum of 50 pages for requests. The conditions described in the second paragraph apply to requests to scan or copy materials.
Fees will apply to any request we receive, and we cannot facilitate rush requests. We will try to make accommodations for Graduate Students

[1] Researchers should understand the St. Lawrence does not own the copyright on many of the titles in our Rare Book Collection, and does not own the literary rights to some of our manuscript collections. In those cases, the onus is on the researcher to seek copyright permission if they wish to publish an image.
